Catalogue is a new gallery space within Penny Lane Records in Sydenham, Christchurch. The gallery exhibits work on paper, card, or board, all sized 31.5cm square - the same size as a record cover!
Glitterbox went to Studio Momentum for the visual branding for Catalogue, after working with them on Winter Wander in 2019. As a result we got some really gorgeous, unique work, with a whole range of design quirks - like the angle, and use of typographical glyphs for decoration.
One of these quirks was the notion of the gallery's flyers being in interesting shapes - rather than a simple A5, for example, for the first exhibition, Compilation, we went with a skinny half-A4.
So when it came to designing a website for the gallery, I wanted to be able to showcase the unique design and aesthetic for each exhibition right on the home page, and to be able to give the site a different (yet consistent) look per exhibition. It's intended as a way to show off the aesthetics of the exhibitions as well as a way to have some fun creating new looks each month - all coded by hand, which gives it a lot of flexibility and room for creativity!
It's built on the 'JAMstack' - a new approach to building websites that uses the latest technologies in ways that are affordable, sustainable (environmentally and financially), and maintainable - and is serverless (instead of paying for a constantly running server that costs money and energy).
It's built with GatsbyJS, a static site generator for React, and uses the latest approaches, like CSS Grid.
Keep checking back in each month to see what's new - and if you think you or your business needs a custom, tailor-made approach to your website that is both affordable and sustainable, get in touch!
