This is a cross-post from my tinyletter - a summary of new music releases I've come across this week, that goes out ahead of these posts. Sign up at tinyletter
Kia ora whānau!
It's a little bit of a quiet week in the NZ releases, I think, but a busy one across the ditch!
Theia - Bye Bye
The new one from Ōtautahi local Theia is rad, it's a bit more chill than her usual style and has a bit of a dark twist to the production. I think it's what they call a banger?
Rebel Yell x Gussy - STAINS
From across the ditch, Rebel Yell has kinda crossed my path a few times but I hadn't really paid much attention until this one and oh wow. Rebel Yell is a producer from Brisbane and Gussy is the vocalist on the track, from Sydney. Definite industrial influences here but with a whole heap of space and room that I love. Check it out and go check out her other stuff, I reckon!
No Sky - Have Fun
This one's from a trio in Auckland that again, are pretty new to me. I really dig the combination of the upbeat & quick guitar & drums with the quite pensive, introspective vocals. If you're into it and based in Tāmaki Makaurau they're playing an all ages gig at the Grey Lynn Community Hall this Friday (alongside milk, a definite fave of mine!)
Jed Parsons - Everybody's Stupid
Another Ōtautahi local, it feels like Jed's been busy this year and I'm really happy about it. Although he's been around for a while (I first met him as part of Jed & Hera way back) he released his first solo single back in Jan and Everybody's Stupid is a great follow up! I really love the beat in this one and god the lyrics are so absurd it's fantastic.
Jaala - Sames
Another new one to me, and another one where I'd definitely recommend checking out the rest of their work after this tune. They're Melbourne based and I just loved this single right away. It's off a new album, Joonya Spirit, coming out in a few weeks (April 20) - keep an eye out!
Death and the Maiden - Ooooh Baby in the Chorus
I'm a long time quiet Death and the Maiden fan and news of a new album is very welcome indeed! The first single is so good, and you can preorder the album already - also out in a few weeks.
Powderpaint - This Being
This one is a bit of a bonus, it didn't end up in my playlist picks but came across my mastodon feed this week and I loooove it. Dancy, disco-y, synthy goodness out of Brighton. Every time I listen I dance in my seat and the lyrics get stuck in my head - 10000% recommended listen!
If you're keen on the tunes I've been including in these and you're Ōtautahi based you might be interested in this real rad night I'm djing at next week - FUN, NATURAL FUN. It's a super neat, queer & trans friendly event that is looking to be a real fun night!
