Kia ora e hoa mā!

It's been a pretty good week for it - let's get right in!

Estère - Nomads

This new one from a fave of mine is off her upcoming double album, My Design, On Others Lives coming at the end of this month! It's up for preorder ($10 digital, $7.50 cassette, $40 vinyl, $25 CD). I managed to catch her at Nostalgia and daaaamn it was so worth it. There's an absolutely fantastic video of this tune played live to accompany the single release.

Julia Deans - The Panic

Another single with a real neat video release, Julia Deans' latest, The Panic, dropped last week. It comes ahead of an album release, We Light Fire, in May. I'm a real huge fan of socially engaged practice in all mediums and this super hits the spot, with an accompanying statement from Julia:

"'The Panic' is about learning to live with our fears & anxieties – with depression. It’s about recognising that all of us harbour these feelings in our own varying forms and, at one time or another, we have to work out how to keep them in check & reign them in before they take over."

Nicole Andrews - Beg for More / Lovely Thing

A new one to me this week, Nicole Andrews is originally from Portland but based in Wellington, and the beautiful combination of minimal electronic production with her vocals is just absolutely gorgeous. Her new album, A Stranger, drops May 4th and she starts a national tour on May 10th - if you're Aotearoa-based you should definitely keen an eye out! She's in Wellington @ Meow on the 10th, Lyttleton @ Wunderbar on the 18th, Queenstown @ the Sherwood on the 19th, and Auckland @ the Wine Cellar on the 25th.

Beg for More is out in a few weeks (I'll make sure to add a link when it's public!) but Lovely Thing is out now.

Stef Animal - The Ghost (Jaycar Waveform Generator)

The album this one is from, Top Gear, came out back in Feb and is sooo worth your time. Stef additionally released a fantastic video for The Ghost this week. It's a short one but it's gorgeous, mirroring the track & album by being shot with vintage equipment and analogue techniques.

Stephanie Harpe & Cindy Paul - The Warrior's Call

This one came from one of the I guess left-field emails that end up in my inbox, but I'm so glad it did. Stephanie is Fort McKay First Nations and this tune, composed with Cindy Paul (Metis/Cree), was written as the theme for the World Indigenous Games 2017. Stephanie's bio is outstanding, and the track itself is just so gloriously strong and upbeat, I can't get it out of my head. There's a great interview & clip of the live performance at the games themselves, too.

In other news this week, October's debut album, Ultra Red is out! She started to appear in the scene back in 2016 with two of my fave tracks of that year, Switchblade and Cherry Cola, and I'm VERY excited about this album. It's on Spotify, Apple Music, and iTunes.

Also out this week is Jaala's newest, Joonya Spirit. The single, Sames, was on last week's list so I'm real keen to give the whole thing a listen!

Finally, if you're Ōtautahi based, you should probably come to FUN, NATURAL FUN tonight @ Space Academy. So many good tunes, it'll be a good time!
