Kia ora whanau! Hope you've had a lovely week - here's some rad tunes to take you into the weekend!

Paper Thieves - Trouble

This is quite a delicious tune, I think. It's fronted by NZer Leah Christensen, but they're based in Berlin & have links to Turkey as well. It starts off feeling like a classic NZ folk tune, but quickly brings in some great rhythms and beats, and it's such a joy to listen to!

Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker (Solomun Remix)

This is also delicious - a nine minute remix of Leonard's You Want It Darker, it really speaks for itself. Quite gritty and sultry at the same time, especially when his vocals come in.

Hypnumb - Bullet

I love this a whole lot - Hypnumb are a local blues band, fronted by Bex B, who describes herself as a "swaggering rock banshee who won her voice in a poker game with the devil", and I tell you, I'd believe it. This tune has a fantastically slow but driven verse followed up by a higher intensity chorus, and the simplicity of the instrumentation really works - it's a treat.

Frankie Cosmos - Duet

This track itself was released back in March but it's just had a great video release featuring Greta Kilne falling in love with a CPR dummy. Plus, it's such a gorgeous tune!

Blood Orange - Charcoal Baby

I loooove Blood Orange & I'm very excited - two new tunes from a new album, set to release later this month! They're both real good and you should check em out, but I've chosen Charcoal Baby in particular. It's beautiful, and the video is incredible. Hynes has a real good statement about the album:

"My newest album is an exploration into my own and many types of black depression, an honest look at the corners of black existence, and the ongoing anxieties of queer/people of color.  A reach back into childhood and modern traumas, and the things we do to get through it all. The underlying thread through each piece on the album is the idea of HOPE, and the lights we can try to turn on within ourselves with a hopefully positive outcome of helping others out of their darkness."

Pacific Heights - The End is in Sight (feat. Joe Dukie)

This one is a bit of a bonus - freshly announced today! I'm a huge fan (Buried By the Burden is still one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard) so any news about this is good news. It's a gorgeous tune, featuring Joe Dukie of Fat Freddy's, & is the second single from his new album, A Lost Light, also released today!

That's it for this week! A reminder of a few things coming up:

  • I'm judging RDU's RoundUp next weekend! It's a very strange feeling but I'm very excited about it - the bands in the grand final sound great.
  • Trainwreck and I have a couple of DJ gigs coming up - CAMP! Drag Show & Dance Party on the 31st and the Neu! Ōtautahi! Incident for WORD Fest the following night! They'll both be incredible (and probably quite different) nights and they're both likely to sell out - so get your tickets soon!
  • I'm also speaking on the Explosive Archaeology panel at WORD fest, chatting with some great people about underappreciated New Zealand artists, musicians, generally good people who don't get enough credit. It'll be really fun! I very well may be severely hungover!
